“Why Is Everyone So Mad?” Lil Mo Vehemently Defends Friend Chrisette Michele

If the backlash hasn’t deterred her, today is the day that Chrisette Michele will perform at the inauguration of Donald Trump. As we shared yesterday, she issued a statement offering an explanation for her choice to perform for the Great Pumpkin Trump. She said she was accepting the opportunity in the hopes of representing the community and being a bridge between the powerful and the voiceless.

People weren’t necessarily buying it and have continued to call her out for her decision. But one person who is defending Michele is her friend and fellow singer Lil Mo. The “4 Ever” singer is a host of a radio show in D.C. called The Fam in the Morning with co-host QuickSilva. Yesterday, she used her platform to stand by her friend after being shaken by how much vitriol was being thrown Michele’s way.

“I have the privilege of having some friends, and when they trend, I want to make sure they’re okay,” she said. “So from last week to last night, up until today, my heart has been real heavy…When I see my friends hurting and I know that they’re hurt — people, you don’t know how words hurt.”

Mo went on to, in a way, compare Michele’s situation to that of Jesus by noting that the same people you praise, you want to go on and crucify them later. She also sought out clarification for the reasons so many seem to be upset.

“Why is everyone so mad? I don’t know if it’s they’re mad or if everyone’s just hurt,” she said. “You have someone that uses their platform to try to figure out and get answers because they are granted that access. Everybody’s not granted access to the Obamas, not a lot of people are going to be granted access to Donald Trump…If they want you in, you have to be invited.”

She continued, “So when a person like Chrisette, who is a friend of mine, who has put more money in my pocket than so many people who owe me money…the way I saw her being attacked on social media, I took it personal. But I said, ‘No, this is business, and there’s a reason why God trusted her enough to accept whatever offer.’ Nobody ain’t even seen the paperwork!”

According to Mo, Michele has always been about love and integrity, and anyone who knows her knows that. That’s why, even in the face of such scrutiny, she’s not backing down and crumpling. Mo even shared a new message from Michele that was sent solely to her following the lukewarm response to the singer’s initial explanation.

“If anyone wants to know, I am in a good space. God is so much greater, and hopefully, there will be a chance to be the salt and the light. It’s my only responsibility on this planet.”

Michele finished her message by stating that she loves everybody, and Mo feels that love and the powerful voice she has could possibly have a bigger impact than most people think.

“Chrisette loves everybody,” Mo said. “So if it takes her singing a song to bridge the disconnect between the people and Donald Trump, if her singing that song will tear down the walls of racism, if her singing a song anywhere will help us…if it takes her singing that song in perfect pitch, perfect harmony and perfect key, then let freedom ring, damnit.”

She continued, getting choked up, “Somebody has to stand and be a voice for us. We can’t just be mad and don’t have a solution. We’re wasting too much time and too much energy upset at something that we can’t control. Tomorrow, we will have a new president. We have to deal with it. We don’t have to accept anything that they dish us, we just have to fight back.”

In the end, Mo said that if she felt like Michele was truly doing something wrong, she would pull her to the side and let her know. However, she respects the singer’s talents enough to believe that she will indeed be the bridge she hopes to be.

“So if you’re racist,” Mo said, “I hope someone sings a song this weekend that pricks your heart and you’re like, ‘I don’t even know why I don’t like this person, but I’m going to let it go.'”
