After Being With A Woman For Two Years, Singer La’Porsha Renae Says She Chose Men Again

La’Porsha Renae, the singer who came in second place on American Idol, recently stopped by “The Real” to not only perform her new single but to clear up a couple of comments she made after the show ended. During her numerous press runs, someone asked La’Porsha what she thought about Mississippi’s House Bill 1523.

The bill was dubbed the Religious Liberty bill and would allow people with faith-based objections to deny wedding services to same-sex couples.

For the life of me, I don’t know why they asked La’Porsha to speak on this. But they did. And her response had people feeling some type of way.

She said: “I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.” Perhaps, as a consolation, Renae said “a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people.”

Yeah, nah.

Later, after the inevitable backlash and accusations that La’Porsha was homophobic came, she offered a few explanations.

Then earlier this year, La’Porsha was still explaining and ended up sharing her personal experience with the LGBT lifestyle.

Well, isn’t that an interesting turn of events. She doesn’t agree with the lifestyle but she was once a part of it. Fascinating. During a sit down with “The Real,” she explained how that happened.

“When people ask me a personal question, I answer it in a personal way. I can only speak from the footsteps and the shoes that I’ve walked in. We have so many variations that make us who we are. The reason I even went towards homosexuality, at first ,was because I was raped, I was molested, I was abused. I saw a lot of people around me going through the same thing with men. So I told myself, ‘I’m not going to be with a man. I’m going to be with a woman.’ And then I just kind of found my spirituality. I found a belief system that worked for me and I said, ‘I actually do want to give being with men another chance.’ And I didn’t want those experiences to define any experience that I would have as bad with a man. But that’s me. I can never said that everybody gets to choose. I never spoke for anybody but myself.”

I hear what La’Porsha is saying. And she is speaking from her personal experiences. There is a very problematic stereotype that purports that people are only gay because of some sexual trauma, that there must be some type of brokenness that makes one gay. Still, La’Porsha  gave her reasons for choosing to be with women. That really is her story. I just think I could appreciate these comments so much more if she hadn’t jumped out of the gate saying that she didn’t agree with the lifestyle in the first place, a lifestyle in which she had already participated. Then we wouldn’t be in the place where the top stories about La’Porsha aren’t about her musical abilities, which are phenomenal, they’re about her thoughts on LGBT issues.
