3 Ways to Stay Woke, but not Awake

As women of color we’re required to tap into our power even when it’s not convenient. Life, love, drama and even tragedy are constant challenges, but sometimes even the strong must wave the white flag so to speak…

Ladies, in order to be conscious on every level, rest and sleep are critical to self- care. There can be no sustained community power, feminine power or financial power unless you have personal health power.

That’s why doing these three things with intention can and will serve and preserve your power.

Get your Sleep!

Studies have proven that a lack of sleep causes significant changes in the body and increases your risk for serious health concerns such as obesity, disease, and even early death.

Sleep is an important function for many reasons. When you sleep, your brain signals your body to release hormones and compounds that help:

  • decrease risk for health conditions
  • manage your hunger levels
  • maintain your immune system
  • retain memory

Gives new meaning to rest your mind, right? You can’t even think straight without enough sleep. If only for vanity reasons, the more sleep you get the better you’ll look; beauty sleep does the most. And the weight gain speaks for itself.

Take care of your mind.

The mind is a muscle, and like the body it must also rest. Also, you must build it up; strengthen it with new learning experiences and with foods and thoughts that are nourishing. When it comes to thoughts, the mind is so critical that even Proverbs 4:23 says:  “More than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from it.” We can literally become what we think about most. So, what’s been on your mind these days?
Protect your energy.

The to-do list may be never ending but, you need to take a break every now and again – be it quiet time or doing absolutely nothing. While energy technically doesn’t have a beginning or an ending, you are human and you can’t be all things, to all people, all of the time. Like a pariah, some people will only take, take, take as long as you’re giving. Others have negative energy that can suck the life out of you if you allow them to. These are people who are not supportive of who you are or where you want to go. This means they are taking up too much of your time, space and energy. These people or situations are wasting you away.

It is your responsibility to make sure your personal & professional relationships are reciprocal in ways that feed your spirit. Energy goes where attention flows.

Our minds, our rest and our energy must be protected and honored if any of us are going to be effective in this world personally and collectively.
