A Money Lesson from Ms. Mills

Grammy winning R&B star Stephanie Mills has always had a powerhouse voice.  And today, she continues to use her voice to speak truth to power even under hard circumstances.

We first met on the yellow-brick road, when she became a household name over 40 years ago, originating the role of Dorothy in the original Broadway production of “The Wiz,” in which she sang the show’s anthem, “Home.”

But nothing is more important than taking care of your real home – the home of your heart, your home life and of course all of your business affairs.  This is all easier said than done.  And unfortunately for Ms. Mills, her affairs were being mishandled and she recently ended with her relationship with her manager, citing financial discrepancies as the reason.

“I decided to come forward to share this because I want to empower other artists to pay attention to their business affairs,” she said. She says she’s grateful that her own business acumen led her to suspect that there were problems in her dealings with former manager.

This is a great reminder to stay woke. As much as we want to trust others, we must always keep our “good eye” on our money, as grandma might say.

We talk to Stephanie about all this and more on Café Mocha this weekend.  Make sure you tune in, not only to hear her story but to learn from her mistakes.
