10 Things about IT, new horror film

Chosen Jacobs costars in Stephen King horror film, IT.

10 Things about IT, Stephen King’s popular novel now a coming-of-age feature film

There are exceptions to everything, namely, my aversion to scary movies. Maybe it’s watching them through my fingers that I dislike. It may be subsequent nightmares that are hard to shake or excessive doses of blood and gore that seem to be part and parcel of this genre. Whatever the reason, for me, it was a true avoidance until this little movie came along.

Why the change?

Childhood friends, the Losers Club, face their fears in the new film, IT, from horror maestro Stephen King

• First, I like the plot—boyhood friends in a midsize, sleepy, and non-descript town set out to have a summer of adventure—or something like that, reminds me of summers gone by.
• There is a sweet little romance at the center of the story that compels you to hang in there despite the unexpected.
• Stephen King’s decades old novel, in the hands of director Andy Muschetti (“Mama”) has a fresh, contemporary veneer, though nostalgic overtones are nuanced throughout.
• The cast is believable. As children, carrying the burden of the town’s obsession with “It,” they remain children rather than little adults trying to resolve and solve a daunting crisis.
• Great placement of horror and laughter–you’re gonna need it!
• The bad guys are dealt with and the good guys prevail, YAY!!!
• The movie paces well, doesn’t seem as long as it is.
• Teen actor Chosen Jacobs (CBS-TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”) looks like a baby-faced Muhammad Ali.
• The underlying message of “face your fears” is a big cinematic and emotional payoff.
• “It” is a movie I’d take my middle school nieces and nephews to see—a story for most ages.

Synopsis—
Seven young outcasts growing up in the township of Derry, Maine, call themselves “the Losers Club.” Each of them has been ostracized for one reason or another, each has a target on their back from the local pack of bullies…and all have seen their inner fears come to life in the form of an ancient shape-shifting predator they can only call IT.

Pennywise is the terrifying clown, IT.

All through the town’s history, a fit of terror lurks, reappearing every 27 years to feed on the fears of its chosen prey, the children of Derry. Banding together over one horrifying and exhilarating summer, the Losers form a close bond to help them overcome their own fears and stop a killing cycle that began on a rainy day with a terrifying clown.

The cast includes Bill Skarsgärd, Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Jack Dylan Grazer, Nicholas Hamilton and Chosen Jacobs with Jackson Robert Scott, making his film debut.

IT, rated R from Warner Bros and New Line Cinema, opens in theaters September 8.
