Discover All The Details On Glossier Play, The Spinoff Cosmetics Line By Glossier With A Big Color Payoff
On February 22nd, 2019, Glossier launched its Instagram account, @GlossierPlay. The brand didn’t say much. The bio teased, “Here for a good time. Glossier Play, a new beauty brand by Glossier Inc.” The account has been dropping cues about the brand, including various moving G logos, an empty nightclub, a girl dancing, and more. Well, beauty lovers no longer have to wait. The new brand that was set to “launch in March,” launched today!
Welcome to the beauty world, Glossier Play. Glossier Play is an amped up version of Glossier. Glossier has become famous for encouraging people to love the skin their in. Instead of trying to cover things up, it lets your skin shine and focuses on skincare. For foundation, the brand has perfecting skin tint and for mascara, they have lash slick for “extensions without the extensions.” The brand boasts enhancing products and offers great skincare products including a facial cleanser, a moisturizer, a makeup remover, facial mist and more. While Glossier didn’t even have a basic black eyeliner (they have a black/brown, noncommittally called Brack), Glossier Play is all about the color payoff.

Posted to their Instagram account at almost 5AM PST, the brand posted a GIF with the caption, “Introducing Glossier Play! A brand of dialed-up beauty extras that make getting ready the best part about going out. Four new makeup products at Glossier.com/Play.” In an interview with Allure, Emily Weiss, founder of Glossier Inc. explains, “It’s kind of like if Glossier is your everyday essentials, [Play] is your going-out makeup.”

…and fun it is! The brand boasts amped up versions of some of their fan favorites and studied the market carefully over the past 5 years. For example, their popular lip gloss is recreated with Vinylic Lip ($16.00, Glossier.com), a highly pigmented lacquer in a click-pen dispenser form that comes in six shades. Taking a play on Urban Decay’s 24/7 glide on eye pencil (that comes in 48 colors at $21.00 a pop), Glossier Play upgrades their eyeliner via Colorslide ($15.00, Glossier.com), a gel pencil that comes in 14 colors, including metallics like Pretty Penny, which is a copper and jewel-tone shades, like Hardcore Velvet, which is a deep teal. They touch on all the color trends of the season, including a deep mustard, that will look excellent against melanin skin tones. At $15.00, these aren’t breaking the bank either. These are perfect for the under eye pops of color we have been seeing everywhere as well as to get all art deco on your lids with lines providing pops of color.
With fantasy makeup being all the trend, there is no surprise that glitter was a major factor in this makeup launch. Glitter Gelée ($14.00, Glossier.com), is a glitter gel that can go literally anywhere from your eyelids to your cheekbones. The site explains, “the multi-dimensional paillettes mirror everything as you move, changing and reflecting color everywhere you look.” On February 28th, the brand had teased the shade Glass Bonsai to their Instagram. This undoubtedly will compete with Fenty Beauty Killawatt. It comes in four shades ranging from Phantasm (described as an opalescent with holographic specks) to silver, to the gold mentioned above, as well as Firewalk, “a coppery, iridescent rose.” Personally, this is my favorite in the product launch!
This doesn’t replace highlighter. They launched Niteshine ($20.00, Glossier.com) in four shades to match many skin tones. The highlighter reminds me of Cover Fx Custom Enhancer Drops ($42.00, Sephora.com)…but at a much cheaper price point. Both use a formula utilizing refined pearls (Glossiers’ is in powder form) to help create a buildable and illuminating finish. You can apply as is or mix with your foundation for an overall glow.
All the products launched are meant to be applied with your fingers; however, that didn’t stop the brand from launching tools to go along with the new products. They launched the Blade ($4.00, Glossier.com), a “German engineered” pencil sharpener for the Colorslide eye pencil and the Detailer ($6.00, Glossier.com), a silicone precision multitool angle brush to help you get your Glitter Gelée exactly where you want it.
