Pat McGrath Makes The Time 100 List
Pat McGrath is undoubtedly one of the most coveted makeup artists in the industry. She has done the makeup for fashion shows in New York, Paris, London, and Milan. She also successfully launched her own makeup line in 2016 and in just three years, it’s now valued at a billion dollars. Her glittery lipsticks and sold out eyeshadow palettes keep beauty lovers on their toes for her new releases, which often sells out in hours.
It’s undeniable the effect (or result, depending on who is asking), on the beauty industry in our culture, so it’s no surprise that Pat McGrath has landed herself on the annual Time 100 list. The Time 100 list honors their roundup of the most influential people in the world. It was first published in 1999.
Though she has been behind the scenes, her work has resulted in serious impact in front of the camera as well as for the industry overall. Beverly Johnson, the first Black woman to appear on the cover of American Vogue (1974) and French Elle (1975) was quoted that McGrath has allowed women of color “to be seen.”
She added, “People of color have long been immersed in beauty…but we have never really been celebrated for our contributions to the fashion industry. And now we have this woman, this creative genius, being celebrated not only for her artistry, but for her business acumen. In our business, she’s already a legend.”
She’s also a legend for the Black community. There are not many people of color who are heralded in the “behind the scenes” arena (think: makeup artists, hairstylists, stylists), so it’s great that McGrath not only gives visibility to others, but also shines as a marker of success.
This years’ Time 100 list also includes Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, Jennifer Hyman of Rent The Runway, and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino.
Congratulations, Pat McGrath!
