Prior to becoming a mom, I had this elaborate wash day routine that began up to two days before my actual wash day — and my hair thanked me for it. I saw tremendous growth and improvement in the health of my hair. Breakage was kept at bay and I was out here flourishing. Once I had a baby, that fancy routine flew out of the window. I barely had time to wash my hair, let alone adhere to my multi-step hair care routine. At the same time, I knew I needed to take action before I experienced a dip in my hair’s health, especially with the threat of postpartum shedding looming on the horizon. Instead of having a slew of products that served different purposes, I needed just a few staple items I could apply with ease and keep it moving — preferably products that I would be able to apply with one hand if need be.

Rice Water & Coconut Fruit Refresher

One item I discovered which has helped me keep my tresses in tip-top shape is the Curls Rice Water & Coconut Fruit Refresher. The hair mist is a part of the natural hair care brand’s Green Collection. According to Curls, the refresher was designed to treat “dry, limp, dull, frail, slow-growing hair.”

I typically apply it to damp, freshly washed and deep conditioned hair before applying a creamy leave-in conditioner. So far, I’ve noticed great results. My hair is left feeling deeply hydrated. Breakage and shedding have been minimal since adding this product to the routine. An added bonus is that the smell is not overpowering. Though the directions say to apply it directly after a wash, I’ve also been applying it throughout the week for a boost of moisture here and there.

It’s A Curl Organic Baby Curl Care

Speaking of postpartum hair care routines, another thing I’ve been having to make time for is my daughter’s ever-evolving wash day routine. Gone are the days where all she needed was a head-to-toe wash and a little Black Jamaican Castor Oil. These days, baby girl’s full ‘fro needs a leave-in conditioner and deep conditioner of her own  — amongst other things. Unfortunately, there are not many products out there for infant hair care, which has meant resorting to kid products. The scary part about using kid products on infants is that they’re not tear-free. For this reason, I was pleasantly surprised when I learned about It’s A Curl Organic Baby Curl Care. The line included baby-friendly tearless shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, and moisturizer.

First and foremost, the Peek-A-Boo Tearless Baby Shampoo has taken a lot of stress out of wash day. Many products claim to be designed for babies but will burn your eyes like you would not believe. This shampoo, however, has kept my daughter’s eyes protected. She has tugged at her hair and then turned around and rubbed her eyes while the shampoo was in on a couple of occasions and nothing happened. That alone had me sold.

The other thing I love about the shampoo is that it does not dry out her hair, unlike other baby shampoos that were not designed specifically for African-American hair. The Ring Around The Curlies Leave-in Conditioner and Itsy Bitsy Spirals Moisturizer are amazing when used together. They leave her hair feeling deeply hydrated and I have noticed a significant difference in the manageability of her hair. The game changer, however, has been that since I’ve been applying the leave-in and moisturizer, I’ve noticed that the area where my daughter’s hair was thinning has begun to fill back in.
