Say Their Names: The victims of July Fourth shootings

What You Need To Know:

6-year-old Jace Young of San Francisco
7-year-old Natalia Wallace of Chicago
8-year-old Royta De’Marco Giles of Hoover, Alabama
8-year-old Secoriea Turner of Atlanta
11-year-old Davon McNeal of Washington, DC
14-year-old Vernado Jones, Jr. of Chicago

These are just some of the Black children killed on our streets over the holiday weekend. Say their names: Jace, Natalia, Royta, Secoriea, Davon and Vernado.

We know and agree that Black Lives Matter. It doesn’t matter on what streets the murders take place — a street corner in Minneapolis, an apartment in Louisville, a suburban road in South Georgia or even a shopping mall in Hoover, Alabama — our children are dying at the knees and guns of White police, self-deputized white citizens and also by Black people who look like you and me.

If we are going to combine our efforts to stop murders by police, we have to work together to stop the murders of each other and the murders of our babies. If we are speaking up to make changes in our law enforcement agencies, we have to make changes on our streets, in our homes.

I realize this may not be a popular stand to take, but if we are making others accountable for the murders of Black folks, we have to hold ourselves accountable for the murders of our own.

What are the answers? Folks who say, “If you know something, say something,” are told “Snitches get stitches.” There are countless reports of witnesses promised anonymity, but in reality, how many times have police arrived, in police vehicles, to take a statement from the “anonymous witness?”

I don’t have the answers. But there are people reading this today who do. The What You Need To Know Newsletter is a platform, so is my YouTube channel. Let’s use this and all the others to talk, ask questions and try to find answers.
