Alexis Herman, 1st Black U.S. Secretary of Labor, Dies at 77 – Los Angeles  Sentinel

Former Secretary Alexis Herman, the first African American leader of the U.S. Department of Labor, had died at the age of 77.

Former President Bill Clinton nominated Herman to the role and she served from 1997 – 2001 following a career in social work, civil rights and Democratic politics.
