DESPITE A BOTCHED EXECUTION AND CONCERNS OVER INNOCENCE, OKLAHOMA PREPARES TO EXECUTE JULIUS JONES

LWhat You Need to Know:

Another innocent Black man, who was sentenced to life at the age of 19 for a crime he did not commit, is scheduled to be executed in Oklahoma Thursday for the 1999 fatal shooting of Edmond insurance executive Paul Howell during a carjacking.

Julius Jones was sentenced to death in 2002 for killing Howell, a White man, in an affluent suburb of Oklahoma City. According to a report from The Innocence Project, Jones was eating dinner at home when Howell was killed. Adding on, court documents show that Jones does not match the description of the killer. The sole eyewitness of the crime described the killer as a man with one to two inches of hair, but Jones was bald at the time of the murder.

The Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board has voted 3-1 to recommend clemency to Jones. The board also voted to recommend a commutation of Jones’ sentence to life with parole.

This is the second time that the Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board has voted to grant Jones clemency. In September, the Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board voted to grant clemency to Jones, but Governor Kevin Stitt stepped in to stop the effort.

This past Monday, the mother of Julius Jones, protestors, Kim Kardashian West, and others sat outside the office of the Republican governor waiting for a meeting. They left unsuccessful, as the governor refused to see them and was told he is not available.
