February 10, 2021 (NBC News) Police Chief Gene Allmond has resigned and Officer John Brooks has been fired from the Hamilton, Ga. Police Department after body camera footage of the two having a racist and lewd conversation surfaced. The conversation between Allmond and Brooks was discovered on January 25 during a review of the entire police department’s body camera footage before erasing them. City officials learned that several officers were not using or wearing their body cameras because they thought the cameras didn’t work. It turns out that the cameras were merely full and needed to be erased.
The conversation took place in June 2020 just before a Black Lives Matter rally in the Georgia town. Allmond and Brooks’ conversation talked about the shooting of Rayshard Brooks, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Stacey Abrams, and slavery. “What they’re saying now is, ‘Well, they didn’t have to shoot him, it’s just a taser.’ Then how come when you taser a f— n— it’s like you done killed him 27 times?” said Brooks. The two went on to agree that they’d rather have sex with Mayor Bottoms than Stacey Abrams.
“Protests – these f—ing people,” said Allmond, who mentioned how he nor his family owned slaves and how slavery was “200 f—ing years ago”. Brooks mentions he found evidence that his family owned slaves and this made Allmond laugh. Allmond replies that he knows slaves were mistreated but were given food, clothing, and shelter and “…all they had to do was f—ing work. And now, we give them all those things, and they don’t have to f—ing work.”
Once the Mayor Pro Tem Ransom Farley, who is Black, Mayor Julie Brown, her assistant Buddy Walker, and a city attorney saw the video, Allmond and Brooks were given two options: resign or be fired. Allmond chose resignation and Brooks was fired after not following instructions to return city equipment and collect his belongings. “Ransom and I have been best friends for 40 years at least…it gets a little emotional. The reaction from him was heartbreaking,” said to NBC News, with his voice breaking.
Why We Need To Know:
The ugly truth about what some white officers and their leaders think about Black people has shown itself. The “Old South” could be staring us right in the face as they answer a call 9-1-1 for help. The city of Hamilton deserves praises for taking swift action to rid its police department of its racist filth, however, I cannot help but wonder: how many more racists within this or other police departments exist and have yet to be uncovered?
