ESSENCE Magazine’s Documentary Series, “Time of Essence” Premieres August 19

ESSENCE Magazine has been an iconic guide for Black women since its inception 53 years ago. The culture-shifting publication has shared the stories of stars including Halle Berry, Whoopi Goldberg, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Regina Hall, Taye Diggs, Gabrielle Union-Wade, and Vanessa Williams among others. Now, it is ready to share its own story.

The “Time of Essence” docu-series follows the brand’s start and takeover through the lens of the stars it platformed and the editors that wrote about them. It premieres Friday, August 18 on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

Episode 1 takes us back to the beginning.

“Chapter One: The 1970s” – At the dawn of the ’70s, as Black women yearn for representation in media and politics, ESSENCE magazine is born. During this turbulent era, while there are wars on the outside for the soul of America, there are also battles taking place within Essence.

There’s nothing better than celebrating the beauty of Black women. Tune in to see just how ESSENCE dominated that.
