Following the upcoming school year, Phylicia Rashad will resign from her position as the Dean of Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts. She has served in the position since 2021.
The renowned actress and Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet is Howard Alum, who graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick announced the news via email to all faculty, staff and students. In the email, President Frederick thanked Rashad for the time and work she’s contributed to the school.
“We deeply appreciate Dean Rashad’s selfless contributions and commitment to our alma mater during her leadership of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts and the many contributions she has made to Howard University’s students, graduates, and global community,” he reportedly said.
What was a full circle moment, being that Rashad is a Howard Alum, has now come to an end. It’s only been just two years since the Emmy and Tony award-winning actress was named the new dean of students. During her time there she renamed the College of Fine Arts in honor of actor Chadwick A. Boseman, who passed away after a silent battle with cancer. Boseman was also a graduate from Howard as well. He received his degree in fine arts in directing. Rashad, who has yet to release a statement or speak of her departure, was one of his professors while he attended.
Frederick also added in the email that they are currently in search of Rashad’s replacement after sharing the news.
